Looking for schools to apply to? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Towson University (TU) draws in students from all over the nation, even from overseas, and it is ranked among the top 200 best universities in the country! If you’re considering applying for the upcoming semester, it’s important to do thorough research to make sure Towson fits your interests, both personally and professionally. Something on most potential applicants’ minds is What is this school known for? In this article, we discuss 3 top things that make TU unique. Let’s get started!

Towson University’s History

Before we get into majors, safety, and sports, let’s talk about Towson’s unique history that dates all the way back to the mid 19th century. It all began in 1865 when the state of Maryland approved the institution of a State Normal School where public school teachers could become trained and certified. Early in 1866, the Maryland State Normal School was established. This was the start of Towson University.

Over the following years, the school grew and was moved to a larger area in Baltimore to accommodate its growth. In 1927, Doc Minnegan began his career at Towson as the athletic teacher. The school mascot, Doc the tiger, was later named after him. The university underwent several name changes as it grew and expanded, and, finally, in 1997 the name was changed to Towson University as we know it today.

TU is now home to six colleges and over 100 undergraduate programs to appeal to a wide variety of career paths. It’s the perfect choice for students who prefer a medium-sized campus with smaller class sizes. Speaking of classes, let’s now get into the first of three characteristics we will discuss that make TU special – its most popular majors. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find that this school fits your criteria perfectly!

Popular Majors & Accreditation

The most popular majors at Towson are Business Administration, Health Professions and Related Programs, Communications, Social Sciences, and Psychology. A little fun fact about the business major: Towson is accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for both its business and accounting tracks. To put this into perspective, less than one percent of business schools around the world are accredited by the AACSB for both their business and accounting programs! So if you’re interested in pursuing the field of business or accounting, you are ensured a quality, challenging learning experience that will thoroughly prepare you to enter the world of business. Regardless of your major though, you’re pushed to sharpen your critical thinking skills, creative abilities, and overall communication skills, all of which will help you in any field you end up pursuing.

Safest College Campus in the Country

Campus safety is one of the biggest considerations for families when their child is applying to colleges, and rightly so! In 2018, Towson was named one of the safest college campuses in the country by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. With its rigorous safety procedures, Towson does its best to keep its employees, faculty, and students safe. It has implemented safety text and email alerts to keep its community aware of any potential threats near or on campus and requires incoming students to watch several safety videos to help encourage a safe and secure campus for everyone. There are also numerous blue light phones located around campus which allow students to call campus police if they feel unsafe or witness a crime.

Tiger Athletics

Towson University is big on sports and fitness. It has 19 NCAA Division I varsity teams for football, lacrosse, field hockey, track, swimming and diving, gymnastics, dance, basketball, baseball, volleyball, and more! However, if you’re not a big sports fan, there are over 300 clubs you can join. There is something for everyone here! Say goodbye to “freshman 15” and stay fit on campus! There is even a fitness center in the newly-renovated Burdick Hall. You can take a break from the stress of homework and sign up for some free exercise and wellness classes that fit your schedule. Take a look on their fitness page to learn more!

So, what do you think? These are only just a few things to consider about TU, but hopefully you have a little clearer idea of what Towson has to offer. Happy school hunting!
