Baltimore County, Maryland is brimming with things to do. From parks and historic sites to shopping malls and fun nightlife, there is something for everyone. Let’s talk about four of our favorite places to visit near one of the largest cities in Baltimore – Towson!

Lake Roland Park

If you’re into nature walks and hiking, then you’re in for a real treat. Baltimore County has several outdoor activities and hiking trails waiting for you! Lake Roland Park, Gwynns Falls, and Loch Raven Reservoir are just three of our favorites. Lake Roland Park sits on more than 500 acres and offers nice hiking trails; water activities including canoeing and kayaking; environmental programs, such as nature book clubs, canoeing trips, camp outs, and plant sales; and the serpentine barrens that offer rare and beautiful plant life. Bring along your family for a relaxing day outdoors. And don’t forget your furry family members – there is even a dog park on the park grounds!

Gwynns Falls & Leakin Park

Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park are composed of more than 1000 acres of land and together make up the second-largest woodland park in the country. Here, visitors can enjoy the 15-mile Gwynns Falls Trail; go birdwatching; play tennis, baseball, soccer, and football on one of the courts or fields; and take in the scenic views.

The 15-Mile Gwynns Falls Trail

The 15-mile Gwynns Falls Trail is good for biking and walking and leads you to a historic greenway stream valley. What’s unique about this trail is that it gives you both an urban and woodland feel with some sections being thick forest and others revealing some of Baltimore’s neighborhoods.

Is the Gwynns Falls Trail Safe?

While Baltimore is not considered the safest area, the Gwynns Falls Trail is considered a safe trail for you and your family. The Baltimore City Police Department has reported no major physical crimes or occurrences since 1999 and will sometimes assign officers to monitor the trail for added protection. In addition, dozens of people use this trail everyday, discouraging crime and contributing to a safer environment. You can relax and take in the fresh air on this popular nature trail. Locals and visitors love it!

Loch Raven Reservoir

If you’re looking for hiking trails of varying difficulties that lead you through beautiful scenery and wildlife, visit Loch Raven Reservoir! Located just under six miles north of Towson, this reservoir offers trails that range from short to long and easy to difficult for all ages and hiking abilities. Along each trail, you can enjoy the plant and animal life as well as the peaceful water vistas. Water from the Gunpowder Falls river fills this reservoir which provides clean drinking water for almost all of Baltimore County. Therefore, swimming in the reservoir is strictly prohibited. However, you can kayak, canoe, and fish as long as you show the necessary permits and licenses. Whether you want to get on the water or enjoy a nice hike, Loch Raven is the place to go!
